*** This is a tale that takes place in Poland during World War II. It starts of with a man, his wife, and his two kids running from some German officers. His wife convinces him to tell his kids to run into the woods until he finds a farmer who will take them in because they won’t survive with them. His wife tells them their names are Hansel and Gretel. If you are familiar with the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel, you will be surprised at how similar the two stories are- even the bread crumbs in the original story is in this adaptation. This story has key elements that the fairy tale has- but instead of an evil witch and an evil step mother, they are the heroes. The story follows Hansel and Gretel’s story, along with their father’s. This book really gave me a different look at World War II- I used to think that Russia was like a savior to the Polish, but the truth is they were almost as bad as the Germans. I highly recommend this book to anyone because it teaches you a lot about the war, and how family and love can overcome the fear of it.

*** This story takes place during World War II. World War II was a horrible war because the Germans were killing Jewish people for no reason. People would do anything to stay alive, in "The True Story of Hansel and Gretel" their father and stepmother sent them off into the woods to hide and find someone that would take them in, in order to stay alive. Hansel and Gretel do things to hide their real lives such as telling people that their father died, and changing their names. You will have to read the book to figure out what happened to their father. This story does follow the childrens fairy tale. So I highly recommend this book to anyone, because it shows how difficult war is and how lucky we have never had to actually live in one.

**** The True Story of Hansel and Gretel. The True Story of Hansel and Gretel is an eye opening story about the struggles of Jewish children during WWII. The two children are separated from their family and are given new German identities in order to survive. The author does an excellent job of showing the horror of WWII while still making the characters wise and strong enough to overcome their different obstacles. Most of the characters in the book are outsiders, which makes you root for their survival even more. I particularly liked this story because it is a different view of the Holocaust rather than the average concentration camp story. The True Story of Hansel and Gretel is nerve-racking throughout and never has a boring part.

The True Story of Hansel and Gretel was the best book I read this unit. It really kept your attention and every event that happened made you just want to read more to find out what the characters do about it. It really gave an interesting perspective of WWII by having it set in a small village in Poland. I totally recommend this book to anyone.

*** “The True Story of Hansel and Gretel” was a very disturbing, yet insightful look at what it was like for Jews during the Holocaust. Two children are renamed Hansel and Gretel to cover up their Jewish names and are running from the Nazis until they reach a hut where an old woman believed to be a witch is. Magda becomes the only family they have and off as her family in their village. Famine, abuse, freezing and living in constant fear are all a big part of their lives that they have to try to overcome over and over. As the Germans start to lose the war, Hansel and Gretel’s father is looking for them, and them for him, until an enemy from their past starts to hunt for them too.

*** The True Story of Hansel and Gretel is set during the time of WWII. A brother and sister who are both Jewish are renamed Hansel and Gretel so that their real names don’t reveal that they are Jewish. They are sent in the woods by their father and stepmother and told to go find a farm and that they will be back for them. Both Gretel and Hansel are taking in by Magda. In this story pretty much everyone is living in fear of famine, freezing to death, or being killed by someone other than their own kind. This story does follow the fairytale for the most part and I would recommend it.

***The True Story of Hansel and Gretel is a rewriting of the fairy tale. It takes place in Poland during World War II. Hansel and Gretel's parents had to leave them in the forest, because they were all being chased by German soldiers. They are renamed Hansel and Gretel, so that no one will know that they are Jews, and are sent into the forest to find somewhere to hide, or someone to take care of them. The children find an old hut, that is the home of Magda, called the witch by her village. The story then follows the children and Magda, and shows that in times of hardship, people will do anything to stay alive, or to save the people they love. I thought this was a great book and a great way to retell the fairytale.

The book I read was “The true story of Hansel and Gretel.” This was a pretty good book. The book is about World War II. During this time the Germans were killing the Jewish people and some Polish people. The main Characters Hansel and Gretel had to change their names after being left in the woods by their father and step mother to escape the Nazis. Hansel and Gretel found a house in the woods that belonged to an old woman. The woman’s name was Magda. Magda takes care of the children and hides them from the Germans. The rest of the book just tells the story of the children hiding from the Germans and how they had to live like that. I would recommend this book to any one who likes to read about this era.

The True Story of Hansel and Gretel is a very good book. It takes place in Poland during World War Two after the holocaust. This book takes you into the lives of a young boy and girl who are renamed Hansel and Gretel so that their real names don’t reveal they are really Jewish. They are left in the woods to fend for themselves while the Nazi’s are chasing them. Hansel and Gretel find Magda, an old woman who lives in the woods who is called “witch”, and she takes them in. The book is very suspenseful, characters are in a constant battle of starvation, fear of being found, or fear of freezing. I would recommend this book for anybody to read, it’s very good.

The wife tells the kids to run until they find a farmer who will help them. They get new names Hansel and Gretel. This story is very similar to the fairy tall but also very different. Instead of the stepmother and the witch being evil they are heroes. Even the bread crumbs are in this story. The story gave me a new look and World War II. I always thought Russia helped the polish, but really the were half as bad as the Germans. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone.

The True Story of Hansel and Gretel was a novel about two Jewish children who try to escape from the Germans. They barely escape the Nazi’s clutches when they stumble upon Magda, the village witch. She creates false identities for the children and keeps them as her own. Their father and stepmother now run with a gang trying also to escape from the Germans. Throughout the story, they starve, are tortured, and suffer from emotional pain. I really liked the story because many people during this time tried to escape, but only a few survived and I liked that these children worked through it. The story did have many miserable points but all in all a good book. Sometimes it was really boring and hard to focus on, but I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in World War 2.

**** I absolutely loved The True Story of Hansel and Gretel. It is about a Jew family who is running from German officers. The step mom convinces the father to leave the two kids in the woods so they can find a farm to live at. The kids end up at this little village and are taken in by a woman, Magda, who is believed to be a witch. Throughout the book the children have to lie to people to live because they are Jews. They are renamed Hansel and Gretel by the step mom to cover up their Jew names. This book is horrific but true in what the people who weren’t German had to go through just to live. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to broaden their perspective on the lives of others.

*** The True Story of Hansel and Gretel took place during World War II. A man and his wife leave Poland and his children are hiding in a sidecar of a motorcycle. The parents let the children out by the woods and tell the children to go into the woods leaving bread crumbs behind and not to get caught. The children make their way to a little cottage in the woods and Magda is who lives in it. Magda takes Hansel and Gretel in and makes them their own birth certificate and dies their hair so they don’t look like Jews. The story switches back and forth between the children and their parents. It has lots of events that are nerve-racking and it’s hard to put the book down, and it changes my thoughts about WWII. I recommend this book to other readers because it caught my attention and it is a good topic to read about. Do the Germans catch the children or their parents?

The True Story of Hansel and Gretel was set during WW2. Hansel and Gretel are two Jews sent into the forest by their father. They had to lead a whole different life. They changed their names to polish names, hid their pas so much that they forgot, and had to learn everything about the Christian religion. Hansel and retell came to the village of Piaski where they would survive until the Russians drove out the Germans. This story shows the side of the war that isn’t talked about much, the Jew side. It showed how they lived and were treated by the Germans. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about WW2.

The True Story of Hansel and Gretel by Louise Murphy is set during World War II. It begins with a Jewish family of four that escaped from the Ghetto. The father and step-mother decide that they have to loose the children for safety reasons. The step-mother renames the two Jewish children, Hansel and Gretel. As Hansel and Gretel wonder in the woods alone, they come across the “witch” of the town, Magna. The story switches back and forth from Hansel and Gretel and the parents. I really enjoyed this book and it definitely was a book that I couldn’t put down. I really think this book is based on survival and hope for the family. I strongly recommend this book to others.

**** The True Story of Hansel and Gretel is about a Jewish brother and sister who are running from the invading Germans. Their father and stepmother, knowing that the children wouldn’t survive with them, dropped them off in the woods and told them to go to the nearest village and see if anyone would help them. Hansel and Gretel wandered through the woods until they found Magda, who said that they would help keep them safe. I really enjoyed the book. I thought that it was a good representation of how cruel the Nazis were during WWII. Though the book was really sad, I would recommend it to anyone who asked.

****This book is about two children who are Jews but have to change their names to Polish names so they can live with a lady in the woods. Hansel and Gretel live with Magda, known as the village witch, while their father and step mom fight the Germans with some other men while trying to find their children. It is a very scary and nerve-racking story and you can’t help but to feel bad for the children. I Recommend this book to anyone who likes books with a lot of action or World War II.
