“Truly terrifying … A book you’ll find hard to put down.” That is what I read when reading the reviews on the back of Kindred. As I read I would have to agree. This is one of those books that keeps you on edge the entire time. You are always wondering what is going to happen next and that is the best part. This book revolves around slavery and the challenges that African-Americans faced.
Dana is a 26 years old and living near Los Angeles when she is first pulled back. Pulled back to where? Well you’ll have to read the book to figure that one out, but I will tell you that it keeps on happening. Also, her trips get longer and longer and she ends up staying for months at a time: never knowing when something will happen to send her home. That is one of my favorite things about this book, the wondering. You never knew when she would be pulled home or pulled away from home. You also never knew if she would take someone with her. All that has to happen is for her to be touching them when she leaves and poof there they go too.
Octavia E. Butler did an amazing job with the suspense in this novel. It may be science-fiction but it almost seems like this could happen to you. That is so cool to me because you know that it can’t yet you are thinking that it can anyways. When you are so into a book that you are thinking that you are watching it happen right in front of you … that is just incredible. I think if you ever get the chance, this would be one of the best books you could pull off the shelf. Even if you don’t like the science-fiction genre!

****I would give Kindred four stars because it was such a great book! It took me back to first grade because it is just like the Magic Tree House books that I used to love. Kindred is about a girl that gets stuck traveling back in time to the time of slavery and racism. She is called back to help save one of her great ancestors, Rufus, when he is in trouble. To get back to her time, she has to be in great danger and facing death. Kindred is a really good book and I highly recommend it!

***I would give Kindred three stars. This book was very hard to put down, you were always woundering what is going to happen next? Kindred is about a girl who goes back in time to save a little boy named Rufus. And she doesnt just go back in time once, she goes back numerous times. She travels as far back as to where she is in the time of slavery. And she has been living where there isnt slavery or racism for that matter around anymore. Rufus is the young boy of a plantation owner in the south. But to get back to her time, she either has to be in danger or to the point where she could be killed! I would really recommend this book!

**** I loved this book! It’s about a black woman named Dana Franklin, who lives in 1976 and is married to a white man named Kevin. Her life is turned upside down when she finds herself repeatedly visiting the 1880’s, a time of slavery, every time her great-great grandfather is in a life threatening situation. She can only return home to her own time if she is faced with a near death experience herself. When that happens, she finds that although many months may have gone by in the 1800’s, it has been mere hours that she is missing from her home. Dana goes through many nerve-rattling events, and is injured many times before the nightmare is over and she can end her odd trips. I would recommend this book to anyone. It is defiantly one of my favorites!

****Kindred is the best book I've read this unit!! It is very hard to put down, and very suspenseful!
This book is about Dana, living in 1976 Los Angeles, and one day starts to travel back in time to the 1800's! Each time she goes back, one of her great ancestors, Rufus, is in danger. She has to save him to save her family to come! There are many obstacles in this book that make Dana's time in the 1800's even tougher, one being slavery. Dana is a black woman, and has to try to fit in to this strange new world each time she gets called back to Rufus. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, it was very good!!

***** I’d give it five stars even though it actually scared me. Kindred is about Dana, an African American woman, and her adventures. Dana lives in 1976, but she gets sent back in time to save the live of a young white boy named Rufus in the 1800’s. After getting called back a few times, Dana learns what slavery and the punishments are like first hand. I would not have survived if I was Dana because it has to be so hard to go through a change like this, that and my mouth. Kindred really helps to show what the times were like back then. I would definitely encourage people to read Kindred.

****kindred, this book was really hard to put down, you were always wondering what would happen next. This book was about an African American girl who goes in back time to save a boy named Rufus. Not only does she go back in time numerous times to save his life, she experiences the life of a slave. Rufus happens to be the son of a plantation owner in the south. She was never really sure how all this happened, she only knows to get there Rufus has to be in trouble, and to get back her life as to be jeopardy. This is a great book I would recommend it to anybody.

Kindred is a really good book for the war and injusties unit. It is about a girl named Dana who is a African American woman and her husband named Kevin who is white. Dana is from 1976 but travels back in time to save a boy named Rufus who lives in the 1800's. Dana goes back just to save him and is treated like a slave while she is there the couple times she goes back, she gets treated like a total slave and is not used to it at all becuase of where she is from. Dana experiances some incredible situitions that I dont think I would be able to handle. This book is a must read! I would defintialy recomend this one.

***I would give kindred 3 stars. This book is very powerful dealing with war and injustice. For me in the beginning this book was hard to follow but as I was told. It kept on getting better and better. It deals with an African American girl and she is taken back in time to meet a boy named Rufus. The two try to untangle the mystery they both are in. Why is dana traveling back in time and with Rufus? Rufus is a boy who lives on a plantation and dana is a woman who lived in the 6o’s traveling back in time, when there was slavery. But threw out the book you find the reason why this happened to dana and how it changed the lives around her and most importantly herself.

I loved Kindred. This book isn’t like any other book I’ve read. It was really interesting to see how two people could be so dependent on each other. Kindred is about a girl named Dana and a boy named Rufus who is her ancestor. The two end up together when Rufus is in danger, and it’s up to Dana whether or not she wants to save him. This book is very hard to put down. It’s not your typical book where you can predict what’s going to happen next. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone.
